What to Expect While Riding the S.S. Badger

Riding the S.S. Badger Lake Michigan carferry is more than just transportation—it’s part of the adventure. Whether you’re crossing Lake Michigan for the first time or returning for a nostalgic voyage, knowing what to expect can help you make the most of your trip. From boarding to arrival, here’s what your journey aboard the S.S. Badger looks like.

A Smooth and Scenic Lake Michigan Crossing

The S.S. Badger sails between Ludington, Michigan, and Manitowoc, Wisconsin, offering a relaxing way to cross Lake Michigan without the long drive around the shore. Once underway, you’ll enjoy open-water views, fresh lake air, and the gentle rhythm of a classic Great Lakes ship.

A Historic Ship with Modern Comforts

As one of the last operating coal-fired steamships in the world, the S.S. Badger delivers a truly unique travel experience. You’ll see historic details throughout the ship, from towering smokestacks to classic deck layouts—paired with modern amenities that make the journey comfortable for today’s travelers.

Room to Relax, Explore, and Unplug

Passengers are free to move about the ship during the crossing. Walk the decks, find a seat to read or relax, get a private state room, or simply take in panoramic views of Lake Michigan. Many travelers appreciate the chance to unplug, slow down, and enjoy the journey without the distractions of the road.

Onboard Dining and Amenities

The S.S. Badger offers onboard food and beverage options, indoor seating areas, and restrooms throughout the ship. Whether you’re grabbing a snack, enjoying a meal, shopping at the “boatique”, playing the famous Badger Bingo, or settling in with a coffee, there are plenty of ways to stay comfortable during the crossing.

A Family-Friendly Experience

Traveling with kids? The S.S. Badger is a family-friendly carferry with space to explore and plenty to keep young travelers engaged. From watching the water to discovering the Kid’s Port Play Area, a secret scavenger hunt, a movie theater, and more, the crossing feels like an adventure rather than a commute.

Bring Your Car—or Don’t!

One of the biggest perks of riding the S.S. Badger is the option to bring your vehicle across Lake Michigan. Cars, motorcycles, RVs, and bicycles are all welcome, making it easy to continue your road trip on the other side. Don’t want to bring a vehicle? You don’t have to! Foot and bike passengers are also welcome and enjoy full access to the ship.

A Memorable Arrival in a Port Town

As you approach port, you’ll be greeted by the charming shorelines of Ludington or Manitowoc. Disembarking is well-organized, and before you know it, you’re ready to explore beaches, trails, local shops, and nearby attractions.

More Than a Ferry Ride

For many travelers, riding the S.S. Badger becomes a highlight of their Lake Michigan vacation. It’s relaxing, scenic, and rich in Great Lakes history—proof that the journey can be just as memorable as the destination.
